Although all of the Occidental Resort destinations offer dive opportunities for divers or all ages, the areas of the Riviera Maya, Cozumel and the Dominican Republic are especially suited to accommodate beginner or junior certification divers.
The Occidental resort properties in these locations all offer parents and children everything they could look for in a family vacation: top accommodations with family friendly services, great beaches, watersports and a good choice of organized activities the whole family can participate in, including scuba diving and snorkeling experiences.
Learning to Dive as a Family:
Introducing your kids, age ten and up, to the world of diving is a simple thing to do when staying at an Occidental resort. All of our resorts partner with professional PADI scuba facilities that offer FREE Scuba clinics in our pools on a daily basis. If you find you have enjoyed this experience, we're confident you will want to move on to the next step and see what it is like to dive in an open water ocean environment.
To do so, you can make a reservation for a Discover Scuba Diving Course with our US based Reservations Office, or you can wait and make your reservation once at your resort. This is a one day course, leaving you plenty of time to pursue other activities on vacation, or if you are really bitten by the diving bug, continuing on to become a fully Certified Open Water Diver.
Our select dive operators affiliate with all of our Resorts offer the Discover Scuba Diving Course and the Certified Open Water Diver Course, as well as continuing dive courses. Our dive operator affiliates are some of the most committed, family-oriented and safety conscious teams you will find anywhere, and all stand ready to teach any family members in good health, of at least 10 years in age, how to dive.
Diving as a Family:
Finding dive sites within the recreational depth limits for junior members of the family (40' maximum depth) is also an easy thing to do at our resort destinations.
Pro Dive Mexico, providing services to the Allegro Playacar and Occidental Grand Xcaret, takes their Discover Scuba Diving students diving to sites that are specifically designed to accommodate less experienced and "junior" divers (those under 16.) In fact the majority of the dive sites in the Playacar area can safely accommodate junior divers, since the reefs tend to be very shallow, with dives taking place "above" and not "aside" the reefs.
Pro Dive Mexico's operations at the Allegro Cozumel and Grand Cozumel offer deep diving during their morning dives, but always have afternoon boat departures available to accommodate their shallow water divers.
Pro Dive Dominican Republic in the Dominican Republic offers many dive options suitable for junior certs and their family members staying at the Grand Punta Cana.
Snorkeling just about anywhere is an enjoyable experience when it is done as a family. The Riviera Maya, Cozumel and Punta Cana all offer areas with lovely beaches that open onto clear waters populated by rainbow-hued tropical fish. It is not uncommon for snorkelers to be able to get up close and personal with sea turtles and other marine creatures who get accustom to (respectful) snorkelers. Get the young ones started early as divers in the making!
Pro Dive Mexico offers snorkel excursions from their operations in Cozumel and Playacar that are suitable for all ages.
They also offer two excursion that though not suitable for young children - are incredible snorkeling adventures: visits to the Riviera Mayan cenotes, thrill of a lifetime excursions to snorkel with whale sharks and adrenalin pumping blue water snorkeling tours to witness the Sailfish run - all unforgettable family experiences if traveling with children mature enough to participate.
